Harun Farocki: "Deep Play", 2007 (stillbilde)

13.10.2007—06.01.2008

The artist and filmmaker, Harun Farocki, has been given access to the footage from the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. Documenta 12, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (MACBA) and the National Museum in Oslo invited Farocki to make a video installation. Using footage from the World Cup Final, security cameras and his own recordings, he made the unique installation, "Deep Play". In this artwork he investigates how new technologies in video and film influence the audience's impressions of the great football spectacle.

"Deep Play" is being shown on 12 projection screens the National Museum's ground floor exhibition space at Bankplassen. The installation consists of FIFA footage, security cameras, Farocki's own recordings, digital analyses of the game, and 2D and 3D animation sequences based on the movement of the players. The audience can relive the exciting final between France and Italy in its entirety, including detailed analyses and digitalised records of the players' time with the ball, dribbling, passing and missed passes. The art project is a complete analysis of the individual game, including Zidane's infamous head-butting incident.

Insightful reworking
Farocki is renowed for his insightful reworking of film material that question visual objectivity. The adjacent rooms at the National Museum show the films "Schnittstelle/Interface", "Vergleich über ein Drittes" and the trilogy, "Eye / Machine I, II, III".

The Oslo Central Station
A special version of "Deep Play" has been made for the Oslo Central Station and is shown inside the station area: at the North entrance, at the entrance to the subway and upstairs at the Airport Express Train terminal. The project "Malouda Fouled" will be shown on the facades of the Central Station and at the Airport Express Train terminal. The installation is produced by Kulturbyrået Mesén.

Cinemateket
Cinemateket will be showing five of Farocki's earlier films in Filmens Hus.

Project Partners
The project started as a cooperation between Harun Farocki, documenta 12, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona (MACBA), DFB Kulturstiftnung Berlin, and FIFA.

"Deep Play" was shown during the large-scale art exhibition, documenta 12, in the summer and autumn of 2007. The installation has been purchased for the collection by the National Museum in Norway.

"Fußball : Football Harun Farocki" and the associated activities in Norway is a cooperative project between the National Museum, Cinemateket and Rom for Kunst at Oslo Central Station.

We are grateful to our partners: the Norwegian Football Association, NSB, ROM eiendom AS, Kulturbyrået Mesén, Panasonic Norway, and Megaprint.
